"Aliens vs. Predator: Prey," published by Bantam Spectra in 1994, is a novel by Steve Perry and Stephani Perry, with a cover by Nelson DeCastro. It adapts the first Dark Horse "Aliens vs. Predator" comic and is the first book of a trilogy about Machiko Noguchi, continued in "Hunter's Planet" and "War."
Machiko Noguchi has recently taken charge of Prosperity Wells, a ranching colony on the planet Ryushi. A rancher's family is massacred, and soon after an unconscious alien giant is found outside town. Two species have landed near the settlement: Aliens, released as game, and the Predators who came to hunt them. The colonists have almost no weapons and are caught between the two.
The book was the first to call the Predators "Yautja," and it gave them a detailed culture and a partial language.
On the colony world Ryushi, young Predators seed the land with Aliens for a coming-of-age hunt. Administrator Machiko Noguchi and her colonists are caught in the middle, until she sides with a wounded hunter.
