Griggs Irving, the CIA lawyer assigned to his defense, is reminded of a South Vietnamese officer blamed for a similar attack in 1968. Then a package from an unknown source brings him the diary of Jean Brunaud, a French soldier who saw the same hunters in the trenches of World War I, near Verdun in 1916.
A CIA lawyer defending an agent accused of a massacre in Nicaragua uncovers older cases, from Vietnam in 1968 to a French soldier's diary written in the trenches of World War I.
